Syston Community Flood Group: Local Volunteers Protecting Their Community

After a second devastating flood hit Syston within just six months, a group of committed residents came together to take action. Formed in March 2024, the Syston Community Flood Group has grown into a dedicated volunteer-led team focused on keeping the local brook free‑flowing and reducing the risk of future flooding.

A Growing Team Making a Real Difference

With around 30 volunteers involved, the Syston Community Flood Group plays a hands‑on role in maintaining local waterways, clearing debris and vegetation to reduce flood risk for residents. Their work has made a tangible difference, achieving far more than would be possible without volunteer support.

Volunteers describe the group as friendly, motivated, and community‑spirited, coming together in a positive and supportive environment where everyone feels valued.

Looking Ahead

Although there are no current volunteering opportunities, work is expected to resume in late spring when water levels become safer. The group also hopes to support projects that improve the brook for wildlife while enhancing natural flood mitigation across the area.
