About this role
The East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA), based at the University of Leicester, has many thousands of oral history and sound recordings. Our new project, ‘Sounds for the Future’ is moving everything onto a new catalogue and digital preservation system. As part of this, we are creating lots of new catalogue entries, digitising everything that is still on tape, and advertising our collections through blogs, podcasts and new web pages.
This provides an opportunity for us to introduce volunteers to working with an archive. You can learn how to catalogue, how to digitise old recordings, and how to edit sound to create short clips for the web. After you have been trained, most of this can be done at home, but you can come to the University’s library and work here too. We can also show you the library and the University’s Special Collections.

Requirements
We ask all volunteers to do some work once a week, at least. For the cataloguing, the main requirements are an attention to detail and the ability to write clearly and concisely. For working with sound, you just need to commit to trying to do something each week - once we have shown you how to use the sound editing software you can work from home at your own pace. If possible, we will try to find subjects that interest you for you to work with.
