About this role

Are you someone who:

  • cares about welcoming young refugees safely to the community and ensuring they receive support to rebuild their lives
  • wants to offer their time and experience to add value to the work of a growing  charity
  • already knows or is very ready to learn about good governance

If so, you may be just the person we’re looking for to join us at this exciting stage of our development!

Who are we?

After18 is a small but ambitious charity based in Leicester since 2013, supporting young refugees aged 13-25 to rebuild their lives here in the UK. We are led by the needs of the young people, which are in a constant state of change as geo-political situations around the world force them to move in order to seek safety.

We are called After18 because we recognise that a young person’s vulnerability and need for support does not end with childhood on their 18th birthday. We are a consistent point of information and support as they transition to adulthood.

Each year through a specialised programme of educational and wellbeing activities we support around 150 young people in Leicester to move towards economic, social and mental wellbeing and to thrive as independent adults. Examples of our work projects can be found on our website www.after18.org.uk.

Who are we looking for?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the diverse and friendly Trustee Board of a growing and well-regarded refugee charity. We are seeking enthusiastic new trustees to bring fresh knowledge and experience to our board in support of the work that we do.

We are looking for applicants with:

  • financial and budget management skills (to take on the role of Treasurer on the Board)
  • AND/OR
  • lived experience of the refugee and asylum system

What will you be doing?

Trustees have the overall legal responsibility for After18. They make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission and ensure good strategic management of the charity.

Being a trustee is a voluntary position. Trustees meet quarterly to discuss the charity’s operations and direction. Preparation for the meetings involves detailed reading of papers provided several days in advance. Trustees may also be consulted on an ad hoc basis by the charity’s staff on day-to-day programmes and operations. The Treasurer is also expected to review the charity’s finances and work closely with the Operations Manager to ensure appropriate use of finances.

This is a rewarding role that will give you the opportunity to help shape the direction and development of our charity. As a Trustee on our Board, you will be making a difference in our local community and in the lives of the young people who access our services.
