About this role
The level of support provided will vary from person to person – some may require a brief intervention to help them overcome one particular difficulty they are experiencing, whilst others with less technological experience may need long-term support as they build their computer skills.
Responsibilities:
· Helping service users with the basics – sending emails, browsing online, filling in online application forms, using social networking, skype etc.
· Activating and optimising the accessibility features or settings on devices
· Downloading and using newly developed apps that can benefit people with sight loss
· Using additional accessibility equipment effectively (such as screen readers and digital magnifiers)
· Pass on IT skills to people on a one-to-one basis
· Helping service users with setting up software, internet safety and security
· Offer informal advice on keeping safe online eg. Guarding against identity theft, phishing and scamming.
All Digital Dynamo Volunteers will:
· Keep an accurate record of volunteering activities and share this with Digital Buddy co-ordinator
· Maintain confidentiality of service user’s personal information in line with Vista’s policies and procedures
· Communicate regularly with the project co-ordinator
· Attend a Digital Dynamo training session if required
· Report any concerns to project co-ordinator
· Attend training sessions.
Qualities and skills we are looking for:
· Good verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to explain things in simple terms without too much jargon
· Confidence with a computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone
· A good understanding of online basic skills
· A sociable, caring and patient personality
· Organisational skills and reliability.
Some Volunteers may have (but it’s not essential):
· A knowledge of all Operating Systems
· Ability to use different forms of social media.
What resources and help is there for Digital Buddies?
We offer induction training in working with people with sight loss, Vista’s Policies and Procedures for volunteers, legal issues and logistics.
We have advice sheets, record forms and posters to download, as well as links to other online resources.
We offer a mileage allowance and pay for reasonable travel costs for public transport.

All volunteers will be expected to:
§ Ensure that they comply with Vista’s Health & Safety policy at all times
§ Take reasonable care for the Health & Safety of themselves and others whom may be affected by their acts or omissions whilst volunteering.
