About this role
The Community Cafe is run by the Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves Good Neighbour Scheme, along with its other services in the village. Woodhouse Eaves is a lovely village to live in but we have many older residents who struggle to get around and who feel lonely. We provide lifts to those who cannot walk to the cafe.
The cafe is held every Tuesday afternoon and attracts around 30 customers at a time. Most are older people but some parents with young children pop in and we want to encourage everyone in the village to feel welcome. In May, June, July and August the cafe is held in the new Youth and Community Hall in the heart of the village, and is a lovely light airy venue.
The cafe is open from 2 to 4.30pm but volunteer helpers are asked to arrive at 1.30 pm to help set up and to stay until 4.45 pm to clear up. We have a group of local volunteers on a rota to help at the cafe but we need additional help as the cafe increases in popularity.
The refreshments are simple – tea, coffee and juice with biscuits. Sometimes a customer will bring in a home-made cake which always goes down well! Some customers play cards and we have books for children, but most customers just like to chat. Occasionally we have a visit from an organisation such as the fire service to talk to our customers.
