Overview:

We are looking for energetic and passionate volunteers to facilitate workshops and assemblies in Harborough or City Centre schools alongside our Young Persons’ team. Help young people to learn about healthy & respectful relationships as well as assertiveness, personal safety and gender equality. If you have experience working with young people we’d love to hear from you. Full training provided.

About the organisation:

Freeva is an independent charity dedicated to supporting victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence in Leicestershire and surrounding areas. We provide specialist services to help any adults and young people cope and recover, to live free from violence and abuse and ensure their voices are heard. We also provide programmes for adults and young people who want to address their abusive behaviours. Volunteers are a vital part of our mission. Help us to us to empower and support victims, challenge abusive behaviours, break the cycle of violence and build cohesive communities. We have various roles in helpline, fundraising and community engagement, project support and training.

What might I be doing?
You might be asked to help with some of the following:
– Co-facilitating assemblies in schools
– Assisting with delivering workshops in classrooms
– Leading workshops* (once trained)
– Leading small group activities, role plays and discussions suitable for specific year groups (from year 5 to year 13).

Assemblies and workshops are already planned and written so the focus is on delivering the planned material.

Assembly & workshop topics might cover:
– Healthy & respectful relationships
– Assertiveness in relationships
– Toxic masculinity
– Gender and gender equality
– Confidence and self esteem
– Personal safety
– Anger and abuse
*There will always be a Freeva staff member on site as well as teaching staff in the room.

What knowledge, skills or qualities do I need?
Experience of:
– Working or volunteering with children and/or young people
– Delivering presentations, workshops, or training sessions

Skills & attributes:
– Ability to explain ideas clearly, confidently in an engaging and age-appropriate way
– Strong listening skills and ability to respond to questions sensitively
– Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion
– An understanding of and alignment with Freeva’s values.
– Confidence with using PowerPoint

An understanding or willingness to learn about:
– The nature of domestic abuse and its effects on adults and children
– Trauma and neurodivergence
– Building and maintaining healthy relationships
– Safeguarding practices and policies

What support and training will I get?
– You’ll be given a thorough induction to Freeva and our various services
– You’ll complete a suite of foundational e-learning modules
– You’ll be given all the role specific training that you’ll need
– You’ll be shadowing other staff or volunteers as part of your training
– You’ll be given ongoing support and training via regular check-ins

Will I get expenses paid?
Yes – travel and other out-of-pocket expenses

When and Where:

What’s the commitment?
– We’d love it if you could give 3-4 hours roughly every 2 weeks.
– Our school bookings are ad hoc, but we would let you know the dates in advance.
– We are looking for volunteers to join us for at least 1 school year. You don’t have to be available for every workshop, but we’d love it if you could do once a month on average.
– Workshops will take place on weekdays in school term times, usually in the mornings from 8:30/ 9am.
– Induction/training is likely to take place in August/September ready for school workshops to begin from September/October.

Where will I be volunteering?
You’ll be volunteering in various schools. You can choose to take part in one of two areas in Leicestershire:
– The Harborough area
– The City Centre area
You may need to come to the Freeva office occasionally for training and/or workshop planning. Our office is near to Leicester city centre & the University of Leicester campus.
Access to your own car for this role would be ideal but not essential to the volunteer role.

Specific Requirements or Restrictions

– You’ll need to be 18 or over – Freeva will arrange for you to have an Enhanced DBS check before you start – We will ask you for two references – If you have experienced domestic abuse or sexual violence, we ask that there has been a minimum of two years since the end of any formal support or treatment related to your experience. If you are unsure whether the timing is right, we encourage you to get in touch for an informal conversation. – Our volunteer application process is robust due to the sensitive nature of the roles we offer
