Shaftesbury Junior School – Garden

About this Opportunity

Overview:

We have a field and small garden area just round the corner from school. The garden has a couple of raised beds, some trees and bushes, a Gazebo and the children have planted things previously. We’ve made bug hotels and released our own butterflies that the children grew. The garden needs some TLC, cutting back, beds emptied and tidied. A coat of stain on the Gazebo general tidy up. Our school is joining in the OUR SCHOOL OUR WORLD National project to encourage children to get out into nature see the biodiversity of our World and we feel our tiny corner might be a place to start. We are making signs to put on the fauna and flora, getting the kids to use British Wild Life Books, to see what we might have visiting the area too. We are a Community School, with no budget, although I might be able to arrange tea & cake!!!

About the organisation:

Junior School with 250 Children in the West End of Leicester. We have a diverse bunch of kids with 47 languages between them!

Full Details:

This would be such a worthwhile project! The children spend so long inside and with us joining the OUR SCHOOL OUR WORLD they will be learning all about the Planet, so brining it down to our ‘back gardens’ is a valuable opportunity, one that would be joyful to watch mature. We have a Newsletter and we would be promoting the seasonal changes on that and in and around school. A nice thing to be involved in.

When and Where:

We only have a hard surface playground within school. But luckily we have a sports field, at the rear of this is our little wooden garden area. It’s a short walk from school and the children do PE on the field, sport day etc Special Groups like our ECO Warriors and Nurture Group have been to the garden we build Bug Hotels and the children had Butterflies raised from eggs we managed 19 out of 20 and the children gleefully released them at the Garden having planted suitable flowers in the preceding months. One child had made a sign, with arrows pointing these flowers out to the Butterflies! The Bug Hotels have been well frequented too! When would be suit the Volunteers I can be available anytime, week days or week ends whatever works.
