Farm Support and Market Gardener – The David Lock Horsepool Foundation

About this Opportunity

Overview:

Would you like to spend time outdoors, meet like-minded people and make a meaningful difference in your local community? Horsepool Farm in Burbage is looking for friendly volunteers to help us support autistic young people and their families. Our farm and developing market garden provide a calm, welcoming environment for one-to-one well-being and therapeutic sessions, as well as sessions for specialist schools. Our ponies, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, alpacas, rabbits, guinea pigs and geese all play an important part in the experiences we offer.
As a volunteer, you will be part of the team that keeps the farm and market garden safe, clean and running smoothly. This practical support enables our farm manager and deputy to spend more time delivering sessions for the young people, families and schools who visit us. You can volunteer as often as suits you, and every hour you give is genuinely valued. A WhatsApp group makes it easy to let us know which day or days you are available, with most help needed in the mornings through to shortly after lunch. Depending on the day, you may help with feeding and watering, poo picking, cleaning animal housing or sweeping the yard. In the market garden, tasks may include planting, identifying and removing weeds, tending borders and hanging baskets, clearing paths and patios, cutting grass and strimming around borders and climbing plants. Whether you are experienced or completely new to farm work and gardening, we will show you what to do so that you feel confident and supported. If you enjoy animals, nature, gardening or simply being part of a friendly team, we would love to welcome you to Horsepool Farm.

About the organisation:

The David Lock Horsepool Foundation mission is to enhance the life of Burbage villagers through local community projects and charity support, with an emphasis on autistic young people and veterans. Our vision on Horsepool Farm is to create a peaceful sanctuary where people and animals come together to connect, learn, and thrive. Part of the Foundation is based on a farm, we have a variety of animals to support our sessions. We are in the early stages of planning a Market Garden which will be based alongside the farm. We offer pre‑booked sessions only, working closely with specialised schools, and families to provide tailored experiences designed to support our benefices We are always looking for like-minded people, who enjoy being outside working with animals, nature and growing. We are very flexible when volunteers can help and will always explain what is needed. Supporters need to be 16 years and above and be able to follow instructions independently. Main hours at the farm are from 9.00-2.00 Monday -Friday and we are open on a Saturday 8.30-12.00. You can come down to the farm as much or as little as you can can manage. Life on the farm and garden are always changing but some of the exciting things you can do is feeding, cleaning, poo picking, hay filling, weeding, planting, grooming and of course cuddles with the animals. By supporting our Foundation you are allowing our farm manager and deputy to support the young people and schools that come to the farm for therapy and well-being sessions.

Full Details:

Horsepool Farm is open Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 2.30 pm and on Saturdays from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. The farm operates every day of the year, so volunteer support is needed each day except Sunday, when the farm manager is on site. We provide the tools you will need, although you are welcome to bring your own gloves. As this is an outdoor role, suitable clothing and sturdy footwear are essential. Our on-site Hub has lockers, refreshment facilities and a fridge where you can keep your food cool. Toilet and hand-washing facilities are also available on the farm.
Whether you are completely new to farm work or already experienced with animals, we will explain and demonstrate every task so that you feel safe, supported and confident before working independently. We will never ask you to do anything that our farm manager or deputy would not be willing to do themselves.
We truly value the time and hard work our volunteers give. As a thank-you, the Foundation funds occasional volunteer breakfasts and lunches. We also arrange Christmas get-togethers, giving everyone the chance to relax, spend time together and meet the wider Horsepool Farm team.
Volunteers must be aged 16 or over and able to understand and follow instructions independently. A DBS check is not required for this role because volunteers will not take part in specialist school or one-to-one sessions.
Before you begin, we will invite you for a friendly tour of the farm and introduce you to the team, including the farm manager, deputy and charity manager. You will then complete a two-week trial so that you can decide whether volunteering with us is right for you. If everything is going well at the end of the trial, we will welcome you into our volunteer WhatsApp group, where you can let us know when you are available to help.
At Horsepool Farm, we work as one team. You will meet friendly people who share a love of animals, gardening and being outdoors, and we hope you will feel welcome from your first visit.
