Grow your own food with Incredible Edible Loughborough

About this Opportunity

Overview:

We are part of the Incredible Edible network, which has 170 groups in the UK. They create community food growing sites on neglected patches of land in our towns and cities. In Loughborough we have six gardens and an allotment which we plant up with vegetables and fruit. In the public gardens anyone can help themselves to the food we grow. If you join us you will gain the skills needed to grow your own food, get good physical exercise in the outdoors and belong to a large friendly group with plenty of social opportunities. You’ll also know you are actively helping to bring communities together and upgrade green spaces in our town.

About the organisation:

Incredible Edible: teaching people to grow food and helping with the climate and nature emergencies. We are part of the Incredible Edible network, which has 170 groups in the UK. Incredible Edible groups grow food on neglected spaces in urban settings, open to the public. We now have six gardens and an allotment in Loughborough growing vegetables throughout the year. Local people can volunteer to work with us and learn to grow food as they go along. Any passersby can pick the food we grow and we never charge money for the food or to join us. We have about 35 volunteers and many supporters who donate seeds and seedlings. This is a community gardening project for improving mental and physical wellbeing. We also show how local food growing can reduce the carbon footprint of our food. We make our town’s green spaces more rich in insects and wildlife. Anyone can join us, no previous experience of gardening is needed.

Full Details:

We can train you to grow food, from sowing seeds in our beautiful greenhouse at Fearon Hall, to harvesting fresh organic food later in the year. You can then use those skills at home in your own garden. If you don’t have a garden don’t worry, we have six gardens and an allotment and anyone can come and join in at any of them. We also run workshops and talks on food growing at Fearon Hall. You don’t need previous experience and you don’t need to commit to be there regularly. And you don’t need to already be a gardener. If you are a gardener have you thought of joining a community group? Working outdoors with others is fun and sociable and a good way to build friendships.

Other opportunities: graphic design for our publicity, Mailchimp mailings, etc; social media and website manager; events organiser; fundraising manager.

When and Where:

With so many sites there is a range of days and times that we garden so you can fit it in with whenever you are available. From December to March we meet irregularly but from March to November there are about 5 different days and times per week that we need helpers, and there is always plenty to do and people to do it with. Best to get in touch for the details as these change year to year.
