About this role
This Machine is Black, a two week exhibition exploring the relationship between technology and race in a unique interactive space inspired by a garden.
Given the importance of technology in our everyday life, and our growing reliance on it during the pandemic, this exhibition brings to life important questions about how our digital tools intersect with our identity. With just 3% of the UK tech force being black, This Machine is Black will create a vital space to integrate technologies’ role in upholding and dismantling racism.
The space, designed like a garden, is split into four themes: Deep Fakes, Surveillance and Privacy, Afrofuturism and Abolition. Each contains unique art pieces, created by Identity 2.0 or a talented artist from a Black, Asian or underrepresented ethnic group.

Volunteer Roles and Duties
As this is a ticketed event, we need someone to help manage the ticketed entries to the exhibition. With the tickets being managed via Eventbrite, all you will need to do is check people in and check they have the correct ticket. This will also include counting the number of people.
You will also be directing people to the gift shop if they want to buy an on the door ticket.
Our gift shop will stock articles, books and resources we used when creating this exhibition. We will also be selling the work of black comic book artists. It will be opposite the LCB cafe area.
Your role will be to (1) facilitate the sale of any of these products, along with any on the doors ticket sales (2) hand out free seeds to anyone at the end of the exhibition (3) keep an eye on the free resources to ensure people don’t take them away!
Exhibition maintenance x 2
There are some points of interaction during the exhibition. We need someone to ensure that the exhibition is well looked after. This might mean making sure all the projectors are working, escorting people through a backdoor corridor or setting up the outdoor part of the installation at the beginning of the day.
Training day: 11th August – Time TBC – location TBC (i.e it could be online or in person at LCB Depot)
This will involve a walkthrough of the exhibition, the roles you might take on, and to go over any questions you might have! You will get to meet us and other volunteers.
It would be great to have a core group of volunteers for a longer period of time, but you can book in for as many or as little times as you want.
