Overview:

In this role, you will help plan, set up, and run large-scale community physical activity events for older people. These events are designed to be fun, social, and accessible – encouraging older people to try physical activity in a relaxed, enjoyable setting. Events may include walking sports, park walks, midday discos, Diwali celebration dances, Calypso Cardio, and other culturally themed activities.

Full Details:

What will you be doing?
• Help set up and clear down event venues, including arranging equipment, signage, and materials.
• Welcome and register participants as they arrive, ensuring their details are accurately captured.
• Support participants during activities, offering encouragement and practical assistance where needed.
• Be alert to any participant who may be struggling physically, feeling overwhelmed, or needing additional support, and flag concerns to staff.
• Provide information about ongoing physical activity sessions and other Age UK services, encouraging participants to stay active beyond the events.
• Assist with distributing promotional materials, refreshments, and event resources.
• Support the Activity Coordinator with event logistics, including liaising with venue staff and managing participant flow.
How would you be supported in this role?
You will receive a tailored pre-event briefing before each event covering your specific role, the venue layout, emergency procedures, safeguarding protocols, and the needs of expected participants. The Activity Coordinator will be present at all events and available throughout. Any agreed and approved travel and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Mass participation events are a key part of the Communities in Motion Programme, reaching older people who may not yet feel ready to join a regular class. Volunteers help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that puts people at ease and encourages them to get involved. Your support makes it possible to run safe, well-organised events that genuinely connect with the community.

This is a flexible volunteering opportunity – we run eight events over the two-year programme, so you can volunteer for as many or as few as suit you. Events may take place at weekends or in the evening. For culturally specific events, we particularly welcome volunteers with relevant language skills and cultural unWhat skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role? • Confidence engaging with older people in busy, social environments. • Ability to spot when someone may be struggling physically or feeling overwhelmed. • Comfort with practical tasks such as registration, setting up equipment, and assisting with activities. • Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner. • For culturally themed events: language skills and cultural understanding relevant to the community being served are particularly valued. • For active events (e.g. walking sports): basic awareness of exercise safety for older adults is helpful but not essential.
