About this role
Help a child learn to read so that they can succeed, in school and beyond.
You’ll spend one hour a week reading stories and playing games with a child aged between 5 and 10 years old, on our secure online platform.
Our online volunteering can fit around your schedule and there’s no need to travel. Our programme involves two 30-minute sessions a week with the same child, for six weeks.
You’ll get to see your young reader progress, knowing that you are opening up a world of opportunity for their future.

How does it work?
Once you’ve applied, we give you training and set you up on our system.
You simply select the programme timing which works the best for you, and conveniently book it through our mobile app.
You’ll then log on to each session through your PC, laptop or Chromebook, requiring both a webcam and an internet connection. Please note that iPads, tablets and phones are not currently compatible. (Don’t worry, you definitely don’t need to be a tech whizz to volunteer, you just need to be comfortable using our online reading platform.)
What else do I need to know?
Our application form is quite detailed. This is so we are able to complete our safeguarding checks and protect the children who read with Bookmark.
You don’t have to fill it out in one go – you’re welcome to come back to complete your application at any time. And, if you get stuck, simply email us at applications@bookmarkreading.org and we’ll be happy to help.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer our volunteer opportunities to anyone who is living either temporarily or permanently overseas as it makes our safeguarding practices very hard to implement.
Our reading programme is designed to complement classroom learning by giving children the opportunity to practice their reading skills and build their confidence. You are not expected to have teaching knowledge. You will get full training to enable you and your reader to get the best out of your sessions together.
